Felt board fun

We had lots of fun the the library with this felt board to go along with the Eric Carle book The Mixed- Up Chameleon. The book is amazing to share with the children as it has a positive message about being yourself, allowed the children to share what they know about these animals and the gorgeous art-work is inspirational. It's a simple but powerful book.

Lucky for us we have most of them in the library. These books thoroughly deserve to be on the shortlist.

Library fun

We've been having a little bit of fun in the library for the first week back at term. Hopefully the kids don't all ask for cookies with their books now: Cookie monster in the library

What's Going On In Your Child's Brain When You Read Them A Story?

An interesting article which highlights the importance of reading picture books to young children. The study the article is based on looks at what happens to children's brains when they are read to, compared to listening to an audio book or watching an animated cartoon.

Auckland Writers Festival - Diary of a Wimpy Kid author Jeff Kinney is coming to NZ

Well exciting news for the Diary of a Wimpy Kids fans - Jeff Kinney will be there and talking for one hour. Tickets can be bought through Ticketmaster. What a treat! The wonderful author of the Dragon Brothers New Zealand author James Russell will also be there. Harry Potter exhibition now online

Last year the British Library opened their exhibition Harry Potter: A History of Magic and it has now closed, but in partnership with Google Arts & Culture, the British Library has now made it accessible online! Magic is real!

Making mini books in the library

We had lots of fun Monday lunchtime making little books. After showing how to fold and cut the paper the kids decorated their books with stickers, beautiful artwork and ministories. It was awesome. If you want to try it after home here if the tutorial I used...DIY Mini Books

What is it like to read with dyslexia?

Have you tried walking in someone else's shoes recently? I came across a newspaper article with a link to a website like that attempts to do just that. The website was created by a friend of someone with dyslexia.

The school library is here to help and support all readers in the school. We have lots of books in the library we can recommend to our dyslexic readers or reluctant readers.  If you need any recommendations or advice please do not hesitate to pop in for a chat or email laurat@kaurilands.school.nz

Welcome to the new Kaurilands school library blog. We want this to be a space to share news books to the library, be informed about library events and activities, visiting authors and illustrators, storytimes and lots more. We would like to share any information which helps to develop and encourage a love of reading.

Kaurilands library is at the heart of the school and we want all children to feel like it is their space to find and discover books and writers that they love.....as the Sapling website puts it so wonderfully ..."because books grows humans".
